    First Community Meetings are designed to foster belonging among new students at the University of Kansas, while connecting them to experienced student leaders. Students living in on-campus apartments, residence halls, or scholarship halls will attend this meeting in their hall. Students living off-campus will attend their meeting at the Student Recreation Fitness Center from 7-8pm. For those living on-campus - Housing Staff and Orientation Assistants will highlight safety and security information, establish community agreements, and discuss upcoming Hawk Week events. For those living off-campus - Orientation Assistants will highlight ways to get involved and connect at KU while living off-campus.     Jayhawk Jumpstart extends the conversation started at orientation about how to thrive as part of the KU community. This program, required for all new KU students, focuses on individual and community wellbeing.     Join us August 21 when we observe the solar eclipse. Lawrence, Kansas, will see the sun covered 99.3% in the middle of the day.

    Join the KU Department of Physics and Astronomy and the KU Natural History Museum at the Shenk Sports Complex to view the eclipse and learn more about this solar phenomenon when it peaks at about 1:10 pm. The family-friendly, drop-in event includes science and art activities, telescope viewing with astronomers, and food trucks that will offer lunch.   • Pin the Tail on the Dollar

    As students walk by Wescoe Beach, they will be invited to play Pin the Tail on the Dollar! Blindfolded and spun a few times, students will be given three chances to mark the fake dollars scattered across a white erase board. If the students hit a dollar, they will receive either a gift card or prize. If they don’t hit a dollar, the students go bankrupt and receive a piece of candy.   • Super Service Saturday

    Super Service Saturday is a one-day volunteer event. While engaging in volunteer opportunities through the Center for Community Outreach (CCO), new KU students will discover community agencies throughout the KU and Lawrence community. Our hope is that students will connect with each other at lunch in the Kansas Union Ballroom and at their site visits in the afternoon, so they feel they truly belong on campus throughout their KU experience.

    Students will arrive in the Ballroom around 11 AM and have time to eat lunch and select their service destination. We expect to place 600-700 students at more than 20 different service sites. All volunteers will be given CCO t-shirts to designate them as KU service ambassadors while in the community. Transportation to and from these sites will be coordinated through KU on Wheels. We expect students to return to the Union from their sites by 2:30 PM, as volunteering ends at around 2:00 PM.     In order to help orient new students to biking safely and confidently around campus and using a bike to connect to other Lawrence resources, the Center for Sustainability and Bicycle Advisory Committee will lead three group rides departing from and returning to the Visitor's Center Parking Lot at Daisy Hill. 

    The three rides will provide options for different skill levels, including: 
    1. Learning safety tips practice skill drills in the parking lot - new riders, no previous experience necessary. 
    2. Exploring riding on streets and into downtown - all levels, should know how to ride a bike
    3. A longer exploratory ride through downtown, across bridge and connecting to trails - all levels, should know how to ride a bike

    Multiple guides and experienced riders from the Bicycle Advisory Committee will lead each ride while sharing safety lessons and noting points of interest. Students who do not yet have a bike will be able to borrow one provided by Ambler's Outdoor Pursuits (first come, first serve).  

    At the conclusion of each ride at Daisy Hill, dinner will be provided in order to ensure students have a solid meal before class the next day while being able to relax and socialize with fellow riders. For more information please contact Kim Criner at
