Become an OA

The function of the Orientation Assistant (OA) position is to serve as a member of the Office of First-Year Experience staff and work toward the goal of assisting new students with their academic, social, and personal transition to the University of Kansas. Orientation Assistants initiate and develop positive relationships and maintain open communication with students and guests at orientation programs and throughout the students' first year at KU. OAs provide information about life at KU, including services, campus facilities, student activities, campus involvement opportunities, academic resources, policies, procedures and academic departments. OAs offer new students an opportunity to connect with current KU students, foster intellectual engagement and belonging at the University of Kansas, in Lawrence, and in some cases, the United States. At orientation, they facilitate small group discussions and activities for incoming students and familiarize new students with the diverse communities that make up the university.

Orientation Assistants serve as an ongoing resource for current KU students. They also serve a unique role as ambassadors for Office of First-Year Experience programming like Hawk Week, KU Common Book, and related programs throughout the year. Some OAs may also serve as peer mentors for fall learning communities, first-year seminars, and/or UNIV courses. Additional work days are required for training events and office programs--this may include evening hours throughout the school year.

The OA team represents the best and brightest KU students. The application for 2019-2020 will open on November 1, 2018.
