Jerica Burgess serves as a graduate assistant for KU’s Office of First-Year Experience. In this role, she assists with Orientation, Jayhawk Jumpstart, and Hawk Week. Jerica also provides support for the recruitment, selection, and training of Orientation Assistant staff. She is passionate about student sense of belonging and helping first-year students get involved on campus.
Prior to joining the team in the Office of First-Year Experience, Jerica earned her B.A. in English and Communication Studies with a minor in Leadership from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is currently working towards her M.S.E. in Higher Education Administration at KU. In her spare time, she enjoys going to coffee shops, reading, yoga, and watching Harry Potter.
My first year in college, it took me a while to find which activities to get involved in. By meeting with several significant mentors, ranging from peer mentors to my academic advisors to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, I was able to make connections with other faculty, staff, and students in order to find a sense of belonging on campus.”
