Discover. Engage. Belong.

World, University & You

This Residential Learning Community brings together students living in Gertrude Sellards Pearson (GSP) Residence Hall, who have an interest in taking a specially designed section of UNIV 101.

World, University & You is a Learning Community focused on exploring KU through a global lens.  In order to appreciate the global, you have to understand the local, so not every topic that we cover will have a global component.  Field trips, visitors, projects, and discussions help students understand how and where they can learn about and become connected and involved with the larger world beyond KU.

UNIV 101
Michelle Arellano, Office of Study Abroad

The two-credit-hour UNIV 101 or Orientation Seminar course associated with this Learning Community is small, enrolling about 19 students. In addition to addressing KU’s global connections, students develop capacities and have learning experiences that will transfer to a variety of campus and life contexts. By becoming a part of the World, University & You community, you will come to know campus better, will more fully understand your individual and team strengths, will practice and develop critical thinking skills, will learn about information literacy and research, and will gain memorable experiences.

Portrait of Michelle ArellanoMichele Arellano is the Associate Director of Student Services for the Office of Study Abroad and has called Lawrence home for the past 21 years. Her love for advising and assisting students began at the start of her KU journey, working as a work-study student in the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office and then ventured into the Office of Study Abroad upon completion of her Undergraduate degree. Having received both her Undergraduate and Graduate degrees from the University of Kansas, she is a diehard Jayhawk. ROCK CHALK! Michele has a strong passion for international relations and study abroad, and although Michele did not study abroad in the traditional sense in college, she spent most of her youth abroad (12 years), living in the Philippines, Yemen and Indonesia and traveling throughout Southeast Asia and Western Europe. Her most recent travels have taken her to Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Japan and visiting family in Vietnam last year.
